Free to use, offered in good faith.

These terms are an agreement between you and Paul Scarratt (“we”, “us”), based in the United Kingdom, covering your use of the Minerva app and the minervaweb.uk website. Please read them. By downloading, installing, or using Minerva, you accept these terms. If you don't agree with them, please don't use Minerva.

The short version

Minerva is free. We're not selling you anything, and there's nothing to pay. In return, we can't promise perfection: Minerva is a safety aid, not a guarantee, and it works best alongside you rather than instead of you.

Nothing to payFree to download and use, for your family's own devices.
An aid, not a guaranteeNo filter is perfect. Your supervision still matters.
Your rights standNothing here removes your statutory consumer rights.
🍎

If you install Minerva from Apple's App Store, Apple's Standard End User Licence Agreement also applies to that download. Where these terms and Apple's differ, Apple's apply to the App Store licence itself; everything below is our own plain-language agreement with you.

01What Minerva is — and what it isn't

Minerva is a web browser for children with a built-in helper (Noctua) that checks pages using on-device AI, plus optional tools for a parent or guardian to set limits and see activity.

A safety aid, not a guarantee.

No content filter is perfect. Minerva can miss things, and it may occasionally get a page wrong in either direction. It is designed to help a caring adult, not to replace your own supervision and judgement. You remain responsible for how your child uses the internet. Please don't rely on Minerva as your child's only protection online.

02Your licence to use Minerva

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use Minerva on devices you own or control, for your own and your family's non-commercial use, in line with these terms.

You agree not to
  • copy, sell, rent, or redistribute Minerva as your own;
  • reverse-engineer, decompile, or try to extract its source code, except where the law expressly allows it despite this restriction;
  • remove or obscure any ownership or attribution notices;
  • use Minerva to break the law or to harm others;
  • try to defeat or misuse its safety features to reach harmful content.

We may update, change, or discontinue Minerva — or any feature, including the optional parent console and its cloud sync — at any time. Because these cloud features depend on services we maintain, they may stop working if the app is withdrawn.

03Parents, guardians, and children

Minerva is meant to be set up and managed by a parent or guardian (18+). If you set up Minerva for a child, you do so as the responsible adult, you accept these terms on their behalf, and you're responsible for supervising their use. You confirm you have the authority to make these decisions for that child.

04Acceptable use

Use Minerva reasonably and lawfully. Don't use it to harass, harm, or deceive others, to infringe anyone's rights, or in any way that could damage Minerva or its underlying services.

05No warranty

Minerva is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, to the fullest extent permitted by law. In particular, we do not warrant that Minerva will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or that it will detect, block, or filter all harmful, unsuitable, or unlawful content, or that it will meet your requirements.

⚖️

Nothing in this section affects statutory rights you have as a consumer that cannot be excluded or limited by law.

06Our liability to you

Minerva is a free tool offered in good faith to help families. To the fullest extent permitted by law:

  • we are not liable for any content your child may encounter, for any decision Minerva makes about a page, or for any reliance you place on it in place of your own supervision;
  • we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential loss, or for loss of data, arising from your use of (or inability to use) Minerva;
  • where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, it is limited to the minimum permitted by law.

We do not exclude or limit our liability where it would be unlawful to do so — this includes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for any other liability that cannot be limited under the laws of England and Wales or your local consumer law. Your statutory consumer rights are not affected.

07Third-party services

Minerva works alongside services run by others — including Apple (iCloud, CloudKit, push notifications, and on-device AI), your chosen search provider, video platforms, and any mail provider you use for reports. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms and privacy policies, and we are not responsible for them. See our Privacy Policy for exactly what Minerva sends to whom.

08Intellectual property

Minerva, the names “Minerva” and “Noctua”, its design, artwork, and software are owned by us and protected by law. These terms don't transfer any of those rights to you beyond the licence to use the app described above.

09Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. If we do, we'll change the “last updated” date above and, for significant changes, note it on the website or in the app. Continuing to use Minerva after a change means you accept the updated terms.

10Ending your use

You can stop using Minerva at any time by uninstalling it. We may suspend or end your licence if you breach these terms. Sections that by their nature should survive — such as No Warranty, Our Liability, and Intellectual Property — continue to apply after your use ends.

11Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales will have jurisdiction — except that if you are a consumer resident elsewhere, you keep the benefit of any mandatory consumer protections of your own country, and may bring proceedings there where the law gives you that right.
